Buying Colored Lens Glasses – What to Look For
Colored lens glasses range from twelve euros for a set of twelve to four-figure prices. In between lies not just money but a different object altogether. This buying guide sorts out what matters – regardless of whether a BERLINEON pair or another one ends up in the cart.
The four checkpoints
1. UV400 – explicitly stated. The lens color says nothing about UV protection. The filter sits in the material, not in the tint. Cheap sets often omit the information or show only "CE" – a minimum standard, not proof of full UV protection. Behind a dark lens without a filter, the pupil widens and lets more UV into the eye than with no glasses at all.
2. Tint strength suited to the use. Colored lens glasses are usually lightly to moderately tinted (category 1–2), because the point is the color, not glare protection. That is right – you just shouldn't expect them to replace sunglasses at the beach. For the city, evenings, indoors and the stage, light tints are better.
3. A frame that lasts. Injection-molded frames from a set break at the hinges or warp. Acetate can be fitted by an optician; adjustable nose pads keep the glasses where they belong. Anyone who uses the pair daily as a ritual notices the difference after a week.
4. Advice before buying. You have to wear a color to know whether it fits you. Buying from private sellers on marketplaces often means no right of withdrawal – the listings say so themselves. So ask first rather than hoping to swap later: if you are unsure, describe your everyday life and the occasion in a few lines and you get an honest recommendation.
A set for €12 or a pair for €111?
Both have their place. A set with twelve colors is a good way to find out which color you respond to at all – as an experiment, for a workshop, for children. But it is not an object you want to wear on your face for long: the lenses are film or thin acrylic, the frame is disposable, and UV protection is a matter of luck.
A handmade pair is a different product. It has real lenses with UV400, a frame that can be adjusted, and – this is not a side issue – it is beautiful enough to actually be worn. The price sits where a good pair of sunglasses sits.
There is little in between. Either you experiment cheaply, or you decide on a piece that stays.

Which color first?
The honest answer: the one that attracts you. If you can't decide, take the color test – three minutes, no account – or follow this rule of thumb from our reading:
- Restless, too many stimuli → green or sky blue + green
- Tired, longing for a new start → magenta + green
- Scattered, looking for concentration → violet + blue
- All fine, just want more lightness → rosé

Frequently asked questions
Can I get colored lens glasses with prescription? Not at the moment; the lenses are plano. If you wear contact lenses, you can wear the glasses over them.
How long do the lenses last? With normal care – soft cloth, no paper, no shirt hem – many years. The tint is in the lens, not a film on top.
Are colored lens glasses suitable for driving? No. Driving calls for a neutral grey tint that does not distort traffic lights and signs.
