Stereo Chrome – Two Colors, One Pair

Ordinary colored glasses have two identical lenses. Stereo Chrome has two different ones: magenta on the left, say, and green on the right. It sounds like a joke or like a 3D cinema pair – and the mechanism is in fact related. Except that here two images are not meant to be separated; two color worlds are meant to merge into a third.

What happens when you look

Each eye sends its own image to the brain. Normally the two differ only in angle, and from that difference spatial depth arises. If the left eye receives a magenta image and the right a green one, the brain still tries to unite both into one impression. The result is not flicker and not a headache, but a blended tone that tips slightly with viewing direction and light – now warmer, now cooler.

People experiencing this for the first time usually describe it the same way: the world looks as if it had two layers. After a few minutes vision adapts, and what remains is an image with more depth than a single-color tint. That is the effect BERLINEON has been producing since 2011 under the name Stereo Chrome.

A note on classification: the opposing color processing of both eyes is a perceptual phenomenon you can reproduce with any two-color pair. What we assign to the combinations in terms of states is our reading – see effects and research.

Why two colors are more than one

With a single-color pair there is exactly one state. The environment turns green, or it turns violet. With two colors there are three: the left, the right and the blend. And because the blend shifts slightly with every movement of the head, the effect stays noticeable longer before vision gets used to it.

Then there is mirroring: every Stereo Chrome combination comes in two versions – color A left and B right, or the other way round. In our reading, the side carrying the calmer color serves the analytical half, the warmer color the holistic half. Whether that holds true is something each wearer can only test for themselves. That is why both versions exist.

Who Stereo Chrome is for – and who it isn't

It fits if you use the glasses as a deliberate switch: put them on, change state, take them off. For creative work, stage, walks, conversations in which you want to be present differently than usual.

It fits less if you want to look through them all day without a break – when driving, for instance. That calls for a neutral grey tint that does not distort colors. Colored lens glasses are not a replacement for everyday sunglasses but an addition.

If you can't decide between the entry pair and the original: the entry pair is quieter, the original louder. Both show what it's about.
